Waxing stone floors to make them look gleaming is a less expensive method of achieving a high shine on your travertine. However, are you aware that this is extremely damaging to travertine and other stone floors?

When waxes or topical sealers are used on travertine tile, the stone begins to deteriorate. The travertine will begin to wear out over time and may become unfixable. By unfixable, we mean that attaining a high gloss-like finish is no longer possible.

When Travertine and Marble stone floors are polished to their full capacity, they are the most stunning. When done correctly, this gloss gives the stone tiles a really opulent and high-end sense. Waxes and topical sealers provide a barrier on the surface of the stone tiles. These sealers degrade with time and may begin to flake or peel off.

Have you found that your travertine tile surfaces scratch or scuff easily? Can you draw a line with your nails across the top? Without viewing your stone, our experts at BIZ floors tell you to have wax on the surface in these ways. When your wax has started to break down, how do we recommend recovering your travertine tiles?

First and foremost, we must eliminate the wax topical. The only method to get rid of wax is to remove it! After allowing the stripper agent to sit for a while, we go down on our hands and knees and apply a razor blade to the surface. We scrape each travertine tile surface slowly to remove as much wax as possible. We suck off all the wax particles and strippers once we’ve finished scraping. Usually, there are leftovers of the wax that did not come up.

Why Biz Floors?

We, at Biz Floors, can technically help you here. We use a technique called honing after scraping the surfaces and removing the majority of the wax. We can now say with certainty what sheen we will be able to achieve for you. Honing is the removal of the travertine’s top layers. It’s similar to wet sanding.

We utilize honing pads to remove any remaining wax and shine the entire floor to a semi-gloss finish. Because the wax has harmed the stone beneath, the calcium in the stone can only assist polish it up to a semi-gloss. We can polish the stone and produce a lustrous sheen on occasion, but not always.
