If you have a tiled floor, then you must also know that the floor has grout. But what is it exactly?
Grout is the fine lining between the tiles that are responsible for holding the tiles in place and protecting the corners and edges of the tiles. These gaps between the tiles are filled with a mixture of cement, water, and sand. Due to this mixture, the grout is porous and more susceptible to damage. Hence, it is advised to replace the grout when damaged.
When is the Best Time to Replace the Grout?
Replacing grout frequently can cost you a lot of money. Therefore, do it only when it is needed. Here are some signs that indicate the need for grout replacement:
- Cracks
- Staining
- Mold build-up
- Excessive wear and tear
- Crumbling
- discoloration
If the grout in your home suffers from any of these damages, consider replacing it on time.
How to Replace the Grout?
Grout replacement is a tedious process and requires precision. Thus, it is advised to follow the given steps:
- Remove the old grout
Remove the previous grout using a chisel-shaped sharp blade. Dig until about 2 mm of depth.
- Even the surface
Make sure that the grout removal happens in an even manner. An uneven surface will lead to uneven regrouting.
- Clean the floor
Clean the floor thoroughly using a handheld vacuum cleaner.
- Pour in the new grout mixture
Pour the new grout mixture into the gaps between the tiles.
- Remove the excess
Use a sponge dipped in water to remove the excess mixture stuck on the tiles.
- Let the mixture dry
Allow the grout mixture to settle in and dry completely.
- Seal the grout
Use a safe sealing agent to seal the grout. This prevents the unwanted penetration of dust and moisture.
You can also use an epoxy-based grout mixture to avoid sealing. This mixture is stronger and more durable than cement-based grout.
