Cleaning and Restoring Slate Floor

Nov 5, 2022

Slate looks stunning when laid down on the floors. However, slate is also extremely sensitive to contamination. Especially by the building materials. Slate floors when covered in building materials like cement residue and gypsum can easily be contaminated and spoil the flooring.

Thus, it is necessary to carry out a thorough cleaning process immediately after the construction ends.

Cleaning the Slate Floor

We recently took over a project to clean and restore the slate floor of our client’s kitchen. This is how it went.

One of our clients consulted our experts and talked about the recent construction that took place in their house. They had renovated their house but did not change the floor tiles. However, once the construction ended, their kitchen floor was covered in cement debris and gypsum. They asked for a thorough clean-up and restoration service.

There were a few weeks before the new kitchen was supposed to be installed. This gave us ample time to do our job. Our team of experts arrived at the site and examined the floor thoroughly. They learned that the floor was covered in cement, gypsum, and other debris from the construction. The ridges and crevices of the slate tiles were filled with these unwanted materials.

Normally, people would just clean their floors using mops and other equipment. But those aren’t capable enough to completely remove the debris from the floor. In such cases, our experts suggest a mild acid wash. This mainly dissolves the debris loosening its grip on the surface.

Once the acid wash is successful, mechanical cleaning begins. It starts with a rotary floor scrubber which is fitted with a medium-strength nylon scrubbing brush. Once the scrubbing is done, the slurry left behind is removed using a high-power vacuum. Next is the hand cleaning which is done to remove the small dirt particles.

The final step of the process is neutralization. It involves using fresh water to completely clean the floor and free it from any solution that could’ve been left behind. Once the floor has been washed with fresh water, it is allowed to dry.

After the cleaning and restoration process, we asked the client to check for anything that must have been missed unintentionally. Our team left the site only after the client was satisfied with our job.
